When the initiators of Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy started out with the transformation of the monumental yet dilapidated building, they discovered that the history of the building hadn't been made public in any form.
The Cultural Embassy has realised a number of special projects, all based on the Lloyd Hotel history.
Book 'Lloyd Hotel' by Annet Lubbers
Historian and journalist Annet Lubbers dived into the archives and talked to a plethora of descendants from emigrants and people who stayed in Lloyd Hotel during one of its many stages.
This resulted in the first publication on the history of Lloyd Hotel. As yet it has not been translated in English, but we are working on it.
Documentary 'The history of a building' by Jeroen Visser and Micaele van Rijckevorsel.
Two filmmakers followed the make-over of the Lloyd Hotel. Their documentary is interspersed by footage from the archives. It gives a fascinating account of the making of a one to five star hotel in a building heavy with history.
Art and Design Commissions
The Cultural Embassy initiated the cooperation with a host of artists and designers.
Christopher Seyfert, Hella Jongerius, Claudy Jongstra, Suchan Kinochita, Michel Francois all contributed original work to the hotel.
These commissions were made possible with the support of the Mondriaan Foundation.
