Lloyd Time on Mondays: Hungarian books and TangoMonday, 26 May 2008 The original shape of Lloyd Hotel was as an emigrant hotel during the 1920s. Among those who stayed here a couple of nights before emigrating to one of the South-Americas, were many Hungarians. Always looking to keep alive a link with the past, Lloyd Time starts next week's edition with the Hungarian writer: Pál Závada. His first novel 'Jadviga párnája' (Jadivaga's Kisses) follows the life of a Slovak minority family, the Osztatnís, from the turn of the century to the 1950s. Its theme is thwarted love within a marriage. The book was a bestseller in Hungary, has been translated many times and filmed by Krisztina Deák. Závada will be interviewed by his translator into Dutch, Mari Alföldy. She studied Classics and Hungarian in the Netherlands, and has won the Kosztolányi award in 2004 for her translations. A number of the Hungarian emigrants boarding one of the Lloyd ships at the time, would have sailed to Argentina, where the Csárdás met with the newest dance style: the tango. Hence a performance by tango orchestra La Ocasión around 10pm. They will play Argentinian tango's and milonga's. For more info: www.la-ocasion.nl/ |
