Architectural historian Gerrit Oorthuys took architect Piet Elling as the focal point for an exhibition on the destiny of the New Architecture (het Nieuwe Bouwen). Amid the big stars of this building style, like G. Rietveld, J.J.P. Oud and J.Duiker, Piet Elling is not a household name. Yet his contribution to the innovative building style, sparked by discoveries like concrete and the use of steel, is major. In Amsterdam, Elling designed the Post CS building, known as the recently shut down ad-hoc headquarters of the Stedelijk Museum.
Using photos, drawings, mock-ups and objects, a history of the New Architecture is shown, with the involvement of experts like Wim de Wagt, Klaas Visser and Tjeerd Dijkstra. The perspective is a concerned one: what needs to be done to save Nieuw Bouwen-buildings from being defaced or demolished?
