CHIKAKO WATANABE
From January 2009 artist Chikako Watanabe, who resides in the Netherlands, is the first Artist in Residence of Lloyd Hotel. For a long time she has been fascinated by the special history of Lloyd Hotel, which was founded as a migrants hotel for the Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd Scheepvaartmaatschappij ( Royal Dutch Lloyd Shipping Company) and later served as a prison and artists’ studios.
With a grant of the ‘Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists, she started a research project into this remarkable history. In Lloyd Hotel she created her installation Lloyd Life, which was exhibited in Lakenhal/ Scheltema in Leiden in the Holland Mania exhitibion.

Holland Mania took place earlier this year; with American and Japanese viewpoints on the Netherlands.
Ask for the Moon
Chikako Watanabe made the special, sensory installation "Ask for the Moon' about the relation between the histories of the Netherlands, Japan and America.
Chikako Watanabe is Artist in Residence of Lloyd Hotel & Culturele Ambassade in 2009 and has let herself be inspired by the hotel for the installation.

The installation 'Lloyd Life' can be seen at the exhibtion '400 year relations Japan - the Netherlands' , from 13 to 30 November in Lloyd Hotel.
