In the mid-nineties, artist Stephen Shanabrook went to morgues in Russia and the US where the corpses of anonymous people were kept who had died in a crime. He made molds from their wounds, cast them in dark chocolate and put them neatly into colourful, luxury chocolate boxes.
A number of them is exhibited by the Cultural Embassy, in the context of the Choca Festival. It is the third time the festival takes place, with the aim 'To inspire, lead and grow the culture of chocolate as an expression of 21st century Amsterdam: sexy, creative, and sustainable.' The 'Morgue Chocolates' could be seen as a counterpoint to the more indulgent offerings elsewhere during the festival.
