During the local 'Museum Night' in Sariev, Bulgaria, NL-Studio organised an exhibition on Dutch Design. During this evening NL-Studio and Cultural Embassy invited Bulgarian design professionals to send in work to be exhibited in Lloyd Hotel.
At the outset, Lloyd Hotel was an emigrant hotel. In the 1920s and 30s among the emigrants that stayed here, were a lot of Bulgarians. Lloyd Hotel was their last stop on the European mainland, before crossing over to South-America. All they could take with them had to fit in a suitcase.
arts & crafts meets design
In order to be selected for the exhibition, the proposed objects had to speak of Bulgarian arts and crafts traditions, or be a contemporary design object.
It also had to fit in a suitcase.
The exhibition shows the relations between Bulgarian arts & crafts and contemporary West-European design.
Bulgaria has a lively arts & crafts movement with a rich tradition.
In a lecture during Lloyd Time on Monday's, on 21 January, Johan van Dijk, director of NL-Studio, will go into the history and current state of Bulgarian design.
