Wim Poppinga's Big Bench is nominated for the Dutch Design Award.
He designed the bench for the park and streetfurniture range of Grijssen. The idea was that a sustainable, high-quality product for the contemporary public space primarily needs to be robust. This idea was translated into a sturdy bench of large proportion with a comfortable look, which invites one to have a sit.
The award ceremony is on 18 October at the Design week in Eindhoven.
Claudy Jongstra won the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Award for Applied Arts and Architecture 2008. The award is for 50.000 Euros and will be handed over on 25 November in the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ.
Claudy Jongstra studied fashion design at Utrecht and started out as a fabric designer, working with John Galliano, Donna Karan, Eskandar Nabavi and Christian Lacroix. For over fifteen years, she has concentrated on designing with felt and felted wool, which she enriches with other materials and colorings. She made tapistries and wall-installations for the Catshuis, the Dutch Embassy in Berlin, and the entrance hall of the Public Library on the Oosterdok in Amsterdam. For these projects, she closely collaborated with architects like Jo Coenen and Claus and Kaan architects. The jury praises the completely independent, autonomous course Jongstra follows, without making any concession to her commissioners.
