Soundtrack CityEastern Docklands Walk With a Soundtrack City player and map you can make a 60-minute walk around the Eastern Docklands and listen to stories, sounds and archive material about this area. The Eastern Docklands have been drastically renovated. Until the 1970's it was a busy sea and Rijnport, in the 1980's a free space used by squatters and city nomads. After a thorough city innovation operation it became a cutting edge part of greater Amsterdam in the 90's. The Eastern Docklands now looks carefully designed, compactly build, and neat. Although peoples live very close together, - it has more inhabitants per square meter than any other Amsterdam neighbourhood -, it is very popular. Are the Eastern Docklands a succesful experiment or another example of the gentrification of a former adventurous rough edge of town? |
