Twin sisters Liesbeth and Angelique, who work under the moniker of L.A.Raeven, stand in a tradition of 'feminist body art'. In their case, this results in art works that speak of an obsession with their joint existence and unhealthy thinness.Their work led to a huge kerfuffle both in the Netherlands and England about how far they go in bodily torturing themselves and each other. The sisters dismiss this as a shallow reading of their work. They claim their intention is to force women to confront their insecurities and sense of physical inadequateness. Yet they seem to have reached the opposite: icon-status on pro-ana sites.
In the Temporary Museum Amsterdam, the Cultural Embassy shows three L.A.Raeven works: the video 'Love knows many faces' (2005) in which they try to drown each other, the video installation '5200 ml'(2006), and text and photos of ballerinas in 'Nature's Choice' (2002). The installation 'Sterk Water', about trying to recapture the past interior of a room by visual artist Ruth Verraes will be shown with thanks to KPN.
