Experimenta - the international festival for experimental cinema – was started in 2003 in Bombay, India by Shai Heredia to draw attention to a practice of filmmaking that exists on the outer fringes of the map of cinema. Through this lecture series, Shai Heredia will discuss both historical and contemporary works by Indian film artists and map the evolution of Experimenta as a product of the city of Bombay.
1. The State
In the late 60's and early 70's, a small group of radical film artists made use of found footage, animation and stylized montage to develop an alternative film syntax for the state funded documentary films made through The Films Division of India. This lecture / screening focuses on this rarely discussed movement of film experimentation in India and recontextualises the works of these visionary filmmakers for audiences today.
2. The Artist
In contemporary India, there is a small, yet fast growing community of film artists who are concerned with extending the parameters of the narrative fiction and documentary genres. Some of these artists use visual abstraction and mythological referencing to craft a personal syntax. This lecture / screening focuses on the works of these artists who endeavour to challenge conventional perceptions of film genre and film form in India.
3. The City
Begun in Bombay in 2003, EXPERIMENTA is the first festival for experimental film and video in India. EXPERIMENTA serves as a forum for both classic and contemporary experimental films from around the world and is a vital showcase for relatively unknown Indian film artists. This lecture / screening maps the process by which EXPERIMENTA came into being and its significance in the context of art and culture in Bombay.
This lecture series is realised in collaboration with Willem Baars Projects and with a contribution from the Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst
