For a brief period in 1939, Lloyd Hotel served as refugee center. At Dutch Liberation Day, this episode in the life of the hotel is commemorated at a lunch with a lecture. The lecture goes into the voyage of the Saint Louis, the ship with a group of Jewish people who departed from Hamburg thinking they would be welcome in Cuba.
