monday, 29 January to 1 March 2007
open all day every day
From the sixties to the late eighies, boys tried to escape from Lloyd Hotel using jeans, cassette-tapes, wooden keys and tooth-paste. The first youth detention centre for boys (1965-1989) wasn't a popular place. Guards and group supervisors had to find a precarious balance between punishment and education. They veered between painting the walls in bright colours to cheer the young prisoners up, and being very severe with them. The 'Jailers' exhibition of documents, photos and instruments that were used to escape, is the new addition to the permanent Lloyd History exhibition. Accompanying the exhibition is a newspaper 'Jailers', with memories of wardens, supervisors and young prisoners.
