This fall the wayward Amsterdam Upstream Gallery celebrates its 10th anniversary with a special exhibition of all its 17 artists throughout Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy. With installations, video, conceptual art, sculpture and paintings they each in their own way use the building to the full: in public spaces, hotelrooms and on Lloyd-tv.
The exhibition can be visited as a tour of the monumental Lloyd Hotel.
Frank Ammerlaan, Cristian Andersen, Marc Bijl, Marinus Boezem, Armen Eloyan, David Haines, Jeroen Jongeleen, Maartje Korstanje, León & Cociña, Jen Liu, Noor Nuyten, Ronald Ophuis, Dennis Rudolph, Pepo Salazar, Rob Voerman, Lucy Wood and Izaak Zwartjes.
Upstream Gallery was founded in 2003 by Nieck de Bruijn. It soon made a name for itself with an internationally orientated programme of young, promising and often rebellious artists. Within a few months Upstream was taken up in the young art fair LISTE in Basel and has been part of the fairs in New York, Basel, Miami, Istanbul and Hong Kong ever since.
Martijn Dijkstra joined the gallery in 2007, and in 2008 Upstream moved to the Amsterdam Pijp. While the artists evolved from promising to established names, the exhibition programme remained surprising and edgy. Upstream placed work in collections of cutting-edge private collectors and museums like the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and MoMA New York.
The Cultural Embassy has a longstanding partnership with Upstream, and has shown work of Ronald Ophuis and Lucy Wood.
