At 16, Sungju Lee was able to escape from North-Korea, crossing the border to China. The book he wrote about his childhood, Every Falling Star, comes out in September. Lee is from a well-off military family but got separated from his parents at 12. In Gyeong-seong, in the north-east of the country, he survived on the streets in a gang. The book, aimed at young adults, is a first-person account of what it is like to be born and raised in a terrifying environment.
Lee is now 27 and studying for a masters degree at Warwich University, UK. He speaks across Europe, Asia and Norht America about his experiences and about North Korean political social issues.
He will present his book and talk about his experiences.
Organised with ABC Amsterdam.
